Nishma Jethwa
MOVEMENT MEDICINE PROGRAMME SENIOR LEAD
Nishma (she/her/they/them) is Movement Medicine Programme Senior Lead at Healing Justice Ldn. Nishma has been a facilitator, educator and organiser for the last 10 years, working in movements and communities to transform oppressive structures. She is originally from London with roots and community in Gujarat and Mumbai.
Over the course of her career, Nishma has worked within and at the intersections of digital rights, gender justice, labour rights, antiracism, generative conflict, transformative justice and community accountability. Her background is in law and she is now focussed on critically looking at and challenging punitive and individualistic approaches to harm, conflict and abuse. Nishma is an abolitionist and facilitates accountability and generative conflict processes for her community.
Nishma’s work seeks to prefigure the liberatory frameworks she hopes to see in the world – it is emergent and exists in the form of ‘experiments’ or ‘imagination practices’. In 2008, she co-founded The Rights Collective, a radical South Asian collective creating space for resistance, solidarity and transformation. She is also a co-organiser at Alternative Justice, a transnational group of practitioners seeking to build a world without prisons & punishment, and a co-creator at Wa’ix, a project led by and for Black, Indigenous and People of Colour aiming to centre their communities’ experiences in the discourse around “decolonising” philanthropy.
